First time learning the basics of the landscape tool in UE4

Over my summer break going into my second year at uni, in my free time, I was learning the basics of the Landscaping tool in UE4.
I leant how to sculpt my landscape, paint layers onto it and smooth/ blend the paint layers.
I BP the grass, trees, plants etc to be randomly placed, scaled and rotated onto the layered material type, I placed trees, rocks and sticks, on my base layer of the forest floor and then populated the grass and other assets types onto my grass material layers.
I also learned how to make physical materials for my landscape environment to allow the playable character to leave different footprints on different material layers and play different footstep FX on the different layers.
I tried making my own materials using Quixel Mixer for my forest floor and pebble lake area.
The video is a quick 3min walk around my environment, It hasn’t got the greatest performance and fps. I think that is due to my lack of understanding of lighting and possibly the placement & amount of grass, trees ad plants etc.

Overall I really enjoyed making this first environment. I have soooooo much more to learn by the sounds and looks of things but I can’t wait to get my teeth stuck in and learn more about the environment landscape design aspect of UE4 and game level /environment design.

This was my first time ever visual scripting and my first programming assignment for my first year. I had only been learning Unreal for about 2 months by this point. For the assignment, we were task to make a level or for the games that we were developing for our first-year Industry development projects. However my Industry development project could not hit the high mark criteria at the time, so I decided to make a short level inspired by Indiana Jones and Aladdin temple escapes. We had to use variables, timelines, basic sound input, effects and collision boxes. I tried to capture the feel through my gameplay as if it just be a cinematic first person perspective.

I used only three free assets packs from the Unreal marketplace and 3d modelled a couple myself using Maya. I acquired the sounds from Free Sounds. Made my own landscape using the unreal tools. This was made in 3weeks.

It is in no way amazing ….. But for my first ever try at Unreal it will always hold a special place with me.      ( I will try and make it better !!! and replace the Video )

Here are two gameplay clips of my end of first-year industry project that I made with a friend from uni.
The premise was ….. Have you ever wonder why you can never find a pen when you need one….? That’s because the pens are actively trying to escape from you using all their ink.
I made and designed the house layout and platforming aspects, The Ai, which is very primitive in that it roams to a random spot every 5 seconds but also chases you when they see you. I modelled and animated the pen character and the SFX. Lighting ….. I realised that the level itself may be a bit big and therefore the lighting looks abt rubbish, but I have not as of yet learnt lighting in unreal engine, that and landscape environments is my next call to action.!!! Hope you like it !!!
